A sump pump is a pump that is installed in the basement of a property and its job is to prevent flooding by keeping an area under a building dry. They are usually installed in pre-constructed sump pits and the water flows through the pump after travelling through drains or by the soil where natural water migration occurs. When there is water in a basement, the sump pump will pump the water away from the building to ensure it stays dry.
Wetness in below ground areas of a house or building is very common and sump pumps are very useful in preventing this. Without a sump pump, it could cost you thousands of pounds of damage because only a little bit of water can cause major problems in properties. There are other problems apart from building damage which is the growth of mould which can lead to major health hazards.
The basics behind how a sump pump works is as the liquid moves out of the sump pit, it will turn on and start moving the liquid through the pipes where your drainage system is located. You won’t need to worry about the water flowing back into the pit because the pipe connected to the sump pump has a check valve to prevent this. The sump pump turns on by a pressure sensor or a float activator arm. The pressure sensor works when water runs over the sensor causing the pump to activate. Whereas, the float activator works manually by flushing water out when you decide it is time. There are plenty of different pumps that are associated with a sump pump but the most common is a centrifugal pump which forces the water towards the sides of a pipe. As a result, this creates a low-pressure area at the centre and the void is filled by the water rushing from the pit.
